GIX – Route Collector

GIX route collector project collects data from several sources in form of MRT dump files in order to visualise the data with information about number of prefixes visible through particular paths.

Details of the project
The project is based on data from participants’ BGP sessions and data collected from BGP prefix table snapshots from Route Views and RIPE NCC RIS projects.

To reduce time required for computations and to keep maps as readable as possible length of AS paths is limited to 3rd level ASNs (all prepends are removed earlier). 1st level ASN is an ASN of the project participant. 2nd level is an ASN directly connected with a 1st level ASN. All 1st and 2nd level ASNs are visualised on maps. 3rd level ASN is an ASN which peers with a 2nd level ASN. Such ASN appears on maps only when there are more than 20 prefixes announced or transited through it.

Maps of the Internet connections visible from GIX participants’ networks are generated every two hours. Maps based on RIPE NCC RIS and Route Views projects are updated from time to time.
Note: all maps are in beta version and will be improved to achieve project goals.
