Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS) now supports using managed node groups for Kubernetes workloads running on AWS Local Zones. This enhancement allows you to leverage the node provisioning and lifecycle automation of EKS managed node groups for EC2 instances in Local Zones, bringing your Kubernetes applications closer to end-users for improved latency. With this update, you can simplify cluster operations and unify your Kubernetes practices across AWS Local Zones and Regions.
Amazon EKS managed node groups provide an easy-to-use abstraction on top of Amazon EC2 instances and Auto Scaling groups, enabling streamlined creation, upgrading, and termination of Kubernetes cluster nodes (EC2 instances). You can now create EKS managed node groups for AWS Local Zones in new or existing EKS clusters using the Amazon EKS APIs, AWS Management Console, or infrastructure-as-code tools such as AWS CloudFormation and Terraform. This feature comes at no additional cost – you only pay for the AWS resources you provision.
To learn more about using Amazon EKS managed node groups with AWS local zones, please consult the EKS documentation.
