CompTIA introduces foundational tech certification

CompTIA has created a certification designed to provide individuals with broad foundational and digital skills that can be used to build a career in technology.

CompTIA Tech+ will eventually replace the CompTIA IT Fundamentals (ITF+) certification, and the certification is designed to provide a “spectrum of tech knowledge and hands-on skills” to students looking to ultimately work in tech-based roles, according to CompTIA. Tech+ builds on the ITF+ certification and has been developed for individuals as well as academic institutions, training organizations, and businesses, CompTIA says.

“Foundational technology skills and basic digital literacy are essential in today’s job market. CompTIA’s global reputation combined with the comprehensive training experience provided by a suite of online learning solutions makes CompTIA Tech+ a valuable credential for anyone who wants to demonstrate their computing skills and explore opportunities in technology,” said Teresa Sears, senior vice president of product management at CompTIA, in a statement.

The Tech+ certification covers basic concepts from security and software development as well as information on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and quantum computing. Among the skills individuals taking the course with learn are:

  • IT concepts and terminology: Understand notational systems, illustrate the basics of computing, and explain the value of data and troubleshooting.
  • Software development: Comprehend programming language categories, interpret logic, and understand the purpose of programming concepts.
  • Infrastructure: Learn how to install common peripheral devices to a laptop or a PC and how to secure a basic wireless network.
  • Database fundamentals: Explain database concepts, structures, and purpose and understand methods used to interface with databases.
  • Applications and software: Manage applications software, understand the components of operating systems, and explain the purpose of methods of application architecture.
  • Security: Understand confidentiality, integrity, and availability concerns of secure devices and best practice methods.

CompTIA Tech+, like other CompTIA certifications, is enhanced with CertMaster, which is a platform that hosts CertMaster Learn Tech+, CertMaster Labs Tech+, and CertMaster Practice Tech+ learning solutions provided by CompTIA. It offers real-time analytics and works on PCs, Macs, and Chromebooks in any learning environment.

The Tech+ certification is recommended for students or aspiring professionals to start their IT careers with a foundation in technology fundamentals. It could also be helpful for tech-adjacent workers who want to improve their technology literacy to enhance their job performance and improve efficiencies in tasks that intersect with technology, according to CompTIA.

“Lifelong learners can stay ahead of their industry’s digital transformation by future-proofing their skills with practical tech knowledge,” CompTIA explains of the Tech+ certification.

Specific details on the exam for the CompTIA Tech+ certification are not yet available, but CompTIA did note that unexpired ITF+ certification exam vouchers can be used for the Tech+ certification exam.
