At $149, the Halo+ is the most expensive smart smoke detector on the market, and given that it bills itself as “the most comprehensive safety solution for the home,” perhaps the company behind the device thinks it’s worth the outlay. Let’s find out.
As the name would suggest, the Halo+ is a circular smoke alarm with a nifty, user-configurable “accent light” that shines upward against the ceiling. Like a color-tunable smart bulb, you can choose the color of this light from a color wheel, or even set it to “party mode,” which is certainly a first for any safety-related smart product. (It’s weird, though, that the light must be set to turn off after 15 or 30 minutes and can’t be used as an always-on nightlight. Halo says it’s working on changing this in an upcoming release.)
